Tinian General Services

After completing his service in the U.S. military, John Attao returned home to Tinian with his family and a renewed sense of purpose. As a disabled veteran, he carried with him the discipline, resilience, and work ethic forged through years of military experience. These qualities soon laid the groundwork for his next mission: entrepreneurship.

Back on the island that raised him, John quickly identified a growing need for reliable landscaping and ground maintenance services. With just a few tools, a vision, and the support of his community, he launched Tinian General Services in 2020. It started as a modest operation and soon evolved into a trusted local name, serving homeowners and securing contracts with government agencies through consistent quality, reliability, and care.

But like many local businesses in the Northern Marianas, Tinian General Services faced an uphill battle. An influx of foreign-owned landscaping companies introduced new competition, often offering aggressive pricing that made it harder for local businesses to stay competitive in

the bidding process. For John, it was a call not to retreat, but to adapt.

Recognizing the need to diversify and strengthen his business for long-term sustainability, John set his sights on federal government contracting. To make that leap, he turned to the Tinian Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for guidance. Through a combination of targeted

trainings, one-on-one counseling sessions, and expert support, John learned how to position Tinian General Services for a new level of opportunity.

With the SBDC’s help, he successfully registered his business on federal contracting platforms, obtained a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) number, and developed a polished Capabilities Statement, essential steps to becoming a federal contract-ready business.

Today, Tinian General Services is actively preparing to pursue SBA small business certifications, opening the door to expanded opportunities and a stronger future. John’s journey is a powerful reminder that service doesn’t end with retirement.

Through grit, strategy, and community-centered determination, John Attao is charting a new path for local businesses in Tinian, honoring the past while building toward a sustainable future.
